Chances are your laptop's built-in webcam isn't that sharp, and the microphone isn't that clear. When buying newWebcam, it makes sense to expect excellent picture and sound quality, but many of the models we tested tend to skimp on sound. Some, like the $129.99Poly Studio P5, offer surprisingly clear audio, but are few and far between. The Dell UltraSharp 4K goes radically in the other direction, as it's entirely video-focused, with no microphones whatsoever. That might seem like a big omission for a $199.99 webcam, but it makes sense: you get better sound from a dedicated webcam.Headsetor oneUSB-Microphoneas a webcam. So if you're serious about video chatting, streaming, or recording clarity, buy these devices a la carte to get the best of both worlds. Dell's focus on imaging pays off as the UltraSharp captures the best image we've seen to date, making it a solid webcam for serious streamers.

The UltraSharp is one of the sleekest webcams we've seen yet, with a 3.54 x 1.65 inch (LW) cylindrical design made of gunmetal aluminum. One end of the cylinder holds the lens, along with an indicator light and an infrared sensor for Windows Hello and presence detection. The other end is completely flat; Connectors for the USB-C cable and mount are located on the underside of the barrel. A simple, flat metal disc serves as a privacy screen, which attaches magnetically to the end of the lens when you want to cover it, and magnetically to the opposite end for storage when you don't. It's a simple, elegant solution that doesn't get in the way of the overall aesthetic.
Magnetic connections extend beyond the lens cap. The rectangular cutout for attaching the webcam on the underside of the case is also magnetic and quickly attaches to the supplied monitor clip or table/tripod stand. Both montages are similarly minimalistic.
The monitor mount is a simple, low-profile clip that flips open to attach to the back of your monitor or laptop, with a narrow prying edge on the top edge. The hinge is rigid enough to feel secure once aligned, and the magnetic insert that attaches to the webcam can be tilted up and down. You cannot adjust the webcam angle left or right in the clip. it always points perpendicular to the screen. The table mount is a small stand with a flat, square base for placing on a tabletop and a screw hole at the bottom for attaching to a tripod. Interestingly, it doesn't tip up or down, so you have to worry about the height of the surface you're placing it on.

All videos, no sound
The UltraSharp webcam can record4KVideo (3840 x 2160 resolution) at 24 or 30 frames per second, or 1080p or 720p video at 24, 30 or 60 frames per second. The lens natively has a 90 degree field of view, but can be set to 65 or 78 degrees. The camera has autofocus, automatic white balance and face tracking that can follow your face, and digital zoom to keep you centered in the frame.
Unlike most consumer webcams, the UltraSharp doesn't have a microphone. This means that the camera cannot record audio itself and relies on a separate audio device such as your laptop's built-in microphone, a USB microphone, or a headphone jack. This isn't a huge loss, as most webcam mics are mediocre at best, and we generally recommend using a headset or mic for the best audio quality on video calls, broadcasts, and recordings. That is, the aforementioned Poly Studio P5 and the $169.99Logitech StreamCamboth prove that solid webcam audio is possible, in packages that cost less than the UltraSharp.
The mildly named Dell Peripheral Manager software lets you customize the UltraSharp's settings and update its firmware. You can use it to set the recording resolution and frame rate, toggle the focus and white balance mode between automatic and slider-adjusted manual settings, toggle the AI Auto Framing feature that follows your face, enable high dynamic range (HDR) Capture video and prioritize exposure or frame rate during capture. The software also has a very basic video capture tool in case you want to quickly create clips (since UltraSharp doesn't have a microphone, it uses your computer's default audio input device).
Dell UltraSharp webcam performance
Under the right conditions, Dell's UltraSharp webcam delivers the best image quality we've seen from a consumer webcam. However, what these conditions are may surprise you. Basically you need a fill light (or ring light) to get the best performance out of this camera.
Image quality when the room lights are on
The photo above was taken from a 4K shot under my bedroom lights. It looks very good, comparable to the $99.99Razer Kiyoin terms of depicting the fine details of my hair and stubble. However, with the overhead lights behind me, the exposure and focus is shifted more to the background than my face. In fact, fine details are even sharper on my shelves than on my face. I can manually adjust the focus using the Dell Peripheral Manager software, but I can't change how the auto exposure works.
Image quality with the room lights off
The next photo shows the camera performing in low light, with the overhead light off and the face lit only by the monitor. My face is certainly the center of attention as the exposure and focus are fixed on it during the test shot. It's also quite bright with just the monitor light. However, the entire frame is grainy, which softens the fine details of my face and adds static to the background.
Image quality with room lights off and using a fill light
The UltraSharp works best with the overhead lights off, but with a fill light (in this case, an inexpensive LED daytime running light) shining straight into my face. This keeps exposure and focus right on my face while keeping noise to a minimum. It's a great image and shows how good UltraSharp video can be. You just have to think about how lit you are and make sure your face is lit and you are not being lit by brighter lights.
Of course, you'll have to consider ambient lighting regardless of the camera you're using, but the UltraSharp really shows how big a difference can be. While it doesn't yet reach the quality of a very good digital camera or a smartphone connected to the computer, it can come close with a little preparation.
The clearest webcam image
The Dell UltraSharp webcam can capture excellent video, but you need to know what you're getting into. Since there's no mic, you'll probably want a USB mic or headphone jack to record your voice (of course you could use your laptop's built-in mic, but it probably won't sound as hot). You also need to be very careful with your lighting and probably use some sort of direct lighting like a ring light for the best results. If you don't mind overcoming those hurdles, the UltraSharp delivers the best image we've seen from a consumer webcam. If you don't want to go through all that or want to spend less, the Poly Studio P5 remains our top pick. For $70 less than the UltraSharp, it has a surprisingly good microphone, and while its image quality isn't quite as sharp, it's a lot less picky about exposure and can capture solid video in most lighting conditions.

Is it better to look above or below the camera? ›Camera placement
Even if you're working with a taller subject, try to keep the lens just above their eyeline. This placement will help to prevent a double chin situation and will yield a much more flattering angle. This rule applies if you're shooting with your webcam too!
This is because the webcam lens is at the TOP your screen, not where the other person's eyes are. The fix: Put a sticky note beside the webcam lens at the top of your screen that says “LOOK HERE! >>>”. You'll appear perfectly eye-to-eye. Glasses: The general rule is keep them off if you can.
Do webcams distort your face? ›Looking at your face on Zoom is like looking in a funhouse mirror. Because we're staring into them head-on and at an unflatteringly close range, Kourosh explains, front-facing computer cameras flatten out our faces, making our noses appear larger and our eyes smaller.

This tactic will mimic the in-person feeling of eye contact. It's important to gauge reactions by looking at the screen, but alternating that with looking at the camera makes the audience feel like you're really talking to them.
The only way to make eye contact with your virtual audience is to look directly at the lens of your camera. Trust me: This will feel really strange at first, because we're used to looking at our screens during video calls just so we can see everyone else (and see how we look).

Where do you look during a Zoom interview? ›Maintain Eye Contact
Make it a point to look directly into the camera, rather than your computer screen. Looking anywhere else—even at the interviewer—makes it seem like you're paying attention to someone or something else. Hide your “self view” to resist the temptation to check yourself out.
Having your subject look directly into the lens will instantly make your video feel more intense. Remember, looking at the camera is equivalent to looking directly into the viewer's eyes. This can be very effective in small doses as a way to communicate urgency.
