The symposium on flat lakes, which took place from 23 to 30 September 1979 at the IlImitz Biological Research Station (Austria), was intended to give insight into current European research on flat lakes. The reason for the restriction to European participants was, firstly, to collect as much information as possible about investigations in a geographic area, and secondly, the limited time and space available. Since shallow lakes pose a number of problems specific to their depth, several symposia have been devoted to this topic. Conferences such as the Symposium on Shallow Water Limnology in Tihany (Hungary) in 1973 and the Flachseeforschung Symposium in Steinhude (Federal Republic of Germany) in 1974 emphasized the need for greater communication between limnologists working in this field. In addition, several international projects, such as the OECD eutrophication program and the MaB project, have incorporated certain aspects of shallow-water limnology. The editors hope that the proceedings presented here will stimulate further research and information sharing in this area.

The nutrient dynamics and biological structure of shallow, non-stratified lakes differ markedly from deeper, stratified lakes: for example, the recycling of nutrients lost through sedimentation is faster, and the potential importance of fish and submerged macrophytes as regulators of the food web is greater. . Also, shallow lakes are more easily affected by fluctuations in the physical environment caused by wind disturbances, temperature changes, etc. Although shallow lakes are usually the most common lake type in lowland countries, they have received less attention than deep stratified lakes and few comparisons have been made between shallow freshwater and brackish lakes. The volume is divided into five main topics, each presented by a guest speaker: nutrient dynamics with particular emphasis on sediment-water interactions and changes in stress (Professor Lambertus Lyklema); Biological structure and trophic interaction (Professor Stephen T. Threlkeld); Submerged Macrophytes: Dynamics and Function in Lake Ecosystems (Adjunct Professor Kaj Sand Jensen); Comparison of freshwater and brackishwater marine ecosystems (Professor Brian Moss); Modeling of the effects of nutrients, the biological structure and the recovery process (Dr. Marten Scheffer).

This volume contains the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Shallow Lakes, held in June 2005 in Dalfsen, The Netherlands. The theme of the symposium was Shallow Lakes in a Changing World and addressed water quality issues such as: B. Changes in lake limnology, particularly due to eutrophication and pollution, increased nutrient loading and productivity, perennial blooms of cyanobacteria and loss of biodiversity.

H. Laffler In the past, Lake Neusiedl, which used to be located in western Hungary, aroused interest mainly because of the huge fluctuations in the water level and the consequent threat to the livelihood of the population, who lived mainly from livestock farming. - agriculture. . Until 1920, around a century after Schubert's visit to the Salzkamergut, Upper Austria's traditional recreation area, the area was largely unaffected by tourism. Probably due to its low popularity, there is almost no documentation in the form of engravings or paintings. One of the exceptions is an oil painting by Schnorr-Carolsfeld from around 1820. It is evident that there were no phragmites at the time he painted the view of Neusiedl. When tourists discovered the shallow Neusiedlersee, it began to attract scientific interest, although some earlier work by mineralogists, geographers, and hydrographers exists. But it was only after World War II that interest was able to intensify, as the lake is now a turbid, alkaline body of water fringed by the extensive fragmitic areas formed after the lake's last drying in 1868. Scientific work fuels important activities such as the International Biological Program, the International Hydrological Decade or Man and the Biosphere, the results of which will be included in this volume. But despite all efforts, Lake Neusiedl will undoubtedly remain a mystery in many ways.

This volume brings together articles on shallow lakes by leading European limnologists. It covers aspects of macrophyte, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos dynamics, nutrient loading, littoral-pelagic and sediment-water interactions, and lake management. The aim was not to separate theory (eg modelling) and management to generate new theories for understanding shallow lake ecosystems. The volume offers a comprehensive overview of the ecology of shallow lakes, a type of lake that differs significantly from deeper lakes. The wide range of topics can also reflect the spectrum of interested readers, such as limnologists, hydraulic engineers, hydrobiologists, who are informed about new developments at a high level.

The V International Rotifera Symposium was chaired by Dr. Claudia Ricci and held from September 12 to 17, 1988 in the town of Gargnano (Brescia), in northern Italy. Thanks to the generosity of the Rector of the University of Milan, a beautiful villa built on the shores of Lake Garda was made available to the 83 people from 20 countries who attended the symposium. Ten of these Rotifera workers had attended the previous four meetings. These symposia fulfill three main functions, the results of which are evident in the contributions contained in this volume. First, due to the heterogeneity of interests and the lack of breakout sessions, participants are exposed to an unusually wide variety of research problems, approaches, and modes of interpretation. In this way, bridges are built between our own research and developments in the entire field. Second, the extensive informal interactions that take place outside the meeting room during coffee breaks, dinners, and excursions provide extraordinary opportunities for research planning and the sharing of results of ongoing work. Third, the familiar facts at these meetings have facilitated interactions during the three-year break between symposia. As a result, interlaboratory visits, acquisition of research material from distant sources, and coordination of related research have been greatly improved. A description of the week's events can serve to convey the atmosphere of the meeting.
